Aerial-Mounted Snow Switch


Automatic Activation - The snow melting system is fully automated and will only activate when needed, which saves energy and operation costs. The high-tech, rugged sensor detects when moisture is present and the temperature reaches a set point. (The temperature is typically set at 39 degree Fahrenheit.) When conditions warrant, the snow switch sends a signal to the master control unit, which then sends power to the heat cable, warming the driveway.

Easy Installation - The snow sensor is mounted by either attaching the mounting hub to a rigid ½-inch or ¾-inch conduit or by installing screws through the four mounting tabs provided. Wiring is performed by terminating your existing wiring to the pre-installed pigtails. The unit is housed in a two-gang PVC enclosure. The overall dimensions of the WZ-2 are 4¾"x7"x2¾", and the unit weighs 2 pounds. The user may access all electronics by removing the four front cover screws.

Adjustable Temperature Trigger Point - Trigger temperature (TT) is the set temperature in which the device activates the systems and is adjustable from 34°F-44°F using the “Temp Adjust” control. When ambient air temperature is below this trigger point, precipitation is assumed to be snow or freezing rain. When above, precipitation is assumed to be rain.

Smart System Ready - Buy the optional CS-1 cable and the snow sensor can connect into compatible smart systems that will allow you to turn your system on and off via telephone at a remote location.

Upgradeable Remote Activation - Control and monitor your ClearZone snow melting system inside your home by adding a remote control panel. The panels are mounted on a 1.75"x19" standard rack mount panel and have a range of up to 1200' away. They provide basic DEICE ON status for the deicing system, along with MANUAL ON, AUTOMATIC, and STANDBY control capabilities.

Adjustable Delay Off Cycle - "Delay Off" refers to the drying cycle timer of the snow sensor. The timer allows the snow sensor to dry the heated surface through evaporation once precipitation has stopped. The drying cycle reduces the chance of moisture left behind refreezing into ice. This timer is restarted by each precipitation detection. Therefore, the snow sensor will continue to operate as long as precipitation is detected, then for the Delay Off period once the precipitation has stopped. All "sensor" modes provide a minimum 2-minute closure to reduce cycling of an external controller or feed blower. When in "controller" mode, the Delay Off time can be adjusted from 30-90 minutes using the "Delay Adjust" control.

Full 30A @ 240VAC Control - The snow sensor can be powered from either a 100-120 VAC or 200-240 VAC 50/60Hz source. Peak power consumption is 15 watts. Voltage selection is performed by installing provided jumpers onto the printed circuit board. The unit provides a single 240VAC @ 30A normally open load contact set. This contact set is paralleled with a low power contact set to provide remote activation monitoring. Operational temperature range is -40vC to +85vC.

Selectable Low Temperature Cutoff - The Low Temperature Cutoff (LTC) option will cause the sensor not to trigger if precipitation is detected below a certain temperature. However, if the deicing system has been activated, precipitation continues, and the ambient temperature drops below the set temperature, LTC will be ignored. This assures that water left behind on the surface during the heating cycle will not immediately refreeze into ice as a result of deactivating the deicing system.

Replaceable Precipitation Sensor - It is recommended that the WZ-2 be powered down and the grid wiped clean with clear water at least once every 4 months. Heavy deposits may be removed using Scotch-Brite.
